Combating Drug Abuse in Fiji, a DFHC Commitment

Drug abuse in Fiji has reached a critical point, with the country’s Police Commissioner describing it as “a life and death situation.”

In response to the growing crisis, Divine Fijians Home Care (DFHC) has intensified its commitment to raising awareness at the grassroots level, calling this fight a vital part of its corporate social responsibility.

Last month, Fiji Police seized 4.9 tons of marijuana and confiscated white drugs such as methamphetamine. The operation resulted in over 100 arrests.

DFHC, a company founded on the hard work of Fijian caregivers in the State of California, is determined to be part of the solution.

DFHC chief executive officer, Poasa Koroitamana expressed deep concern over the effects of drug abuse on the nation’s youth.

“It pains me to see young people dying from substance abuse.

Their dreams are being cut short, limited to what the streets have to offer,” Mr Koroitamana said.

“As caregivers, we understand the burden drug use places on families. It is not easy to care for someone suffering from addiction—regardless of the substance.”

Mr Koroitamana added that DFHC sees drug awareness as not just a social responsibility but an economic one.

“This is now our socio-economic responsibility. We must act,” he said.

In line with this commitment, DFHC recently sponsored the Nausori Rugby Club’s awareness campaign.

The company provided uniforms for referees at a local tournament dedicated to educating youth about the dangers of drug abuse.

“We’ll continue to support initiatives that strengthen our communities,” said Mr Koroitamana.

“We cannot allow our people—especially our young ones—to fall victim to drugs. We will help in whatever way we can.”

Fiji’s Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said the war on drugs was impacting Fijians deeply.

He said many people were turning to drugs as a means of survival.

Mr Koroitamana said the conversation around drugs must be honest and open.

“This is not something to sugarcoat. It’s serious. It needs to be talked about at all levels.”

This recent sponsorship marks DFHC’s second direct initiative in support of substance abuse prevention in Fiji, with more planned in the near future.
